Mr. Chris Thompsen with the Forestry Department shared with our Kindergarten, First, and Second Grades the story of Smokey the Bear. Smokey even made a special visit to Fort Lewis to remind everyone to take care of our natural resources. Our Second Grade classrooms learned the importance of trees and were surprised to discover the products that we use daily that contain materials from trees.
The Fort Lewis community was treated to a Holiday performance of mulitcultural music and songs by the Fifth Grade classes last evening at the General PTA Meeting. The students did an outstanding job!! This was an excellent way to begin the holiday season.
This week the Holiday Shop is open giving students the opportunity to do some Holiday Shopping for friends and loved ones. Be sure to send money for your child in an envelope that is clearly marked “Holiday Shop”. The children get so excited when they get to do the shopping!!
Just a few reminders for everyone:
**Permission forms for Grades 3-5 are due for the Glenvar Middle School Holiday performance.
**Peel To Save Cards are on sale through the end of next week in the front office. Each card is $10.00 and includes coupons from various fast food chains in Roanoke.
**Schools are closed December 20-January 2 for Winter Break.

It seems hard to believe that we have been in school for two weeks!! Everyone has settled into their new routines, and the fine quality instruction that we know and love here at Fort Lewis has begun.
Our PTA has a wonderful new fundraiser this year. We are selling various types of bags as well as cookies. If you do not have your fundraising packets, please call the office and we will get one to you.
The following are important dates in September that you may want to mark on your calendar at home:
September 14: PTA Board Meeting 6:00 PM
September 17: Third Grade Field Trip to the Greek Festival
September 28: School-wide Bus Evacuation Drill
September 30: Fall Pictures
Students in Grades 1-5 should now have their student planners. Take a moment to look over the information that is included in the first few pages. Also, the back of the agenda book is a copy of this school year’s important dates. We hope you enjoy the new features of our student planner.

I am excited to report that the cafeteria and the gym will be open for students and staff on Monday, March 8. The construction crew worked on the tile floor in the hallway on February 20-21. The children entered the building on Monday, February 22 to find that the construction tunnel had been removed and the new floor was present. On Wednesday night, February 24, the cafeteria floor was installed. The staff and students are excited and ready to regain this portion of the building.
I would like to thank everyone for coming out to the Winter Carnival on February 20. The children had a wonderful time!! This was a successful event for the PTA.
On Wednesday, March 3 at 6:30, Fort Lewis Elementary will host a Question and Answer session with Dr. Lorraine Lange and Mr. David Wymer. I invite everyone who is able to attend. This session will take place in Fort Lewis Elementary’s gym. We look forward to seeing you.
